Riverland All-Stars Awarded in Apostolic Challenge

Indigenous AFL team The Riverland All-Stars, has taken out the award for the most successful challenge in last month’s regional Apostolic Challenge.

Part of the SA Works funded Aboriginal Opportunity Knocks project, the challenge was run by staff at the Interwork Riverland office, headed by experienced football player and coach Brett Blackwell.

The team came third in a regional competition, a credit to the efforts of all players and the commitment of Brett and the other Interwork Berri staff including Tracey Richardson and Barry Sims.

The players were presented with the award at the presentations evening for the various Apostolic Challenges throughout the region held on Monday, November 12 held at the Berri Resort Hotel.

Initiated by the Riverland Employment and Training Network (DFEEST) in partnership with the Riverland Local Community Partnership (DEST), the Apostolic Challenge project aims to develop the employability skills and personal attributes of school leavers and community members who are currently unemployed or underemployed.

Interwork would like to thank Bob Pitson, a Director of the Aboriginal Culture and Sports Festival for securing the team’s accommodation at the Point Pearce Health Centre and Steve Mele from Bowland in Berri for sponsoring the football jumpers.

We are also grateful to Sonia Walters of the Premiers Department, Social Inclusions Unit for her support and funding for registration fees, food and travel costs, and Kingsley Abdulla from the Gerard Mission for organising the team’s free travel to Moonta for the Carnival.

Congratulations to the Riverland Interwork team and the Riverland All-Stars, including Sam Mitchell, Kenneth Karpany, Simon Sumner and Bradley Heally who took part in the challenge for making it a success.
