South Australians with a severe disability who need a support person with them are now able to attend sporting, recreational or cultural events for the price of one admission.

An Australia-wide initiative, the Companion Card was launched in South Australia on Monday, December 3, the International Day for Disability by the Minister for Disability, Hon Jay Weatherill.

The credit-sized Companion Card can be presented at participating venues or events where cardholders will not be required to pay an admission fee for their companion who is providing attendant care.

The card will be available to people living in South Australia who have a significant and permanent disability; unable to participate at most community venues and activities without attendant care support because of their disability and need for support is ongoing.

AFL matches at AAMI stadium, Adelaide and Monarto Zoos, and the Reading Cinemas at West Lakes and Elizabeth are among the events where the Companion Card can be used.

The card, which is free and valid for up to five years, can be used interstate with other participating states, including Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania.

Processing of applications will commence in the first quarter of 2008. A growing list of South Australian affiliates is available at www.sa.companioncard.org.au.
