Earlier this month, the State Government announced an increase in expiation fees for drivers who park in disabled spaces wtihout a permit.
Minister for State/Local Government Relations, Jennifer Rankine, said drivers who sneak into disabled parking spaces without a permit will be hit with a $227 fine, almost trebling the former penalty of $78.
"Should they fail to pay this fine, and are summoned to court, they could face a maximum penalty of $1250," Ms Rankine said.
"It is a constant source of annoyance and frustration to people who have disabled parking permits when fit and healthy people steal the parks reserved for people with a disability."
"It’s unfortunate that we have people in the community who don’t do the right thing, but perhaps the notion of a hefty fine will deter them from parking illegally, for good," she said.
